"Eye of the Day" Exhibition: Interpreting the World Through the Sun

Srisasanti Gallery is back with a group exhibition featuring artists from different countries. Eye of the Day invites 17 artists from Indonesia and abroad, including Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Brazil, and Spain. The exhibition uses the idea of the sun as a metaphor for shared experiences perceived across different places and contexts, influencing how we see the world. The exhibition features over 40 new paintings and drawings in various media.

The title derives from the Indonesian word for the sun, ‘matahari’, which translates literally to ‘eye of the day’. This poetic etymology, a compound of ‘mata’ (eye) and ‘hari’ (day), speaks to the nuances of language and how meaning can shift across cultures, hinting at the loss of translation and the diversity of interpretation. The sun takes on different meanings depending on the place. Its meaning shifts with latitudes. The universality of the sun’s presence constructs our understanding of the world. Eye of the Day sees the artists not as those who impose meaning but as guides who introduce us to how people around the globe interpret the world (or their world).

Despite many individual differences, these artists have nothing in common other than a specific theme or visual tendencies. Instead, their practices each feature a variety of approaches and styles that reflect differing stories, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds. The works presented act as bridges, connecting diverse viewpoints across hemispheres. The exhibition presents works from Indonesian artists, including Abenk Alter, Addy Debil, Agugn, Anjastama HP, Darbotz, Eko Bintang, Fandi Angga Saputra, Liffi Wongso, Riono Tanggul, and RYOL, as well as works from Bibi Lei (Japan), Fabio Dourone (Spain), Kyeonghoon Oh (South Korea), Lucas Noguera (Brazil), Ruo-Hsin Wu (Taiwan), Yool Kim (South Korea), and Zhou Song (China).

Eye of the Day opens to the public until 4 May 2025. Exhibition hours are Tuesday to Friday from 12 to 7 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 8 PM at Tirtodipuran Link Building A, Yogyakarta. The exhibition catalog is printed in a limited edition and available in the gallery space. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the City of Talents.
