When Hindia’s “Lagipula Hidup Akan Berakhir” Becomes a Keepsake We Can Treasure

Amid the dominance of digital streaming platforms, physical releases in the music industry are actually finding a new place in fans’ daily lives. Physical releases, as objects that can be fully owned and collected, have now become part of the fan experience in discovering and enjoying a musician’s work. In this context, box sets emerge as a comprehensive release format, expanding the album into a complete experience through design, memorabilia, and exclusive items that serve as “treasures” for fans. It is precisely this experience that Hindia offers through the vinyl box set Lagipula Hidup akan Berakhir.

Three years after the album was first released digitally and on CD, it is now available again as a vinyl box set produced by 1024. This release is designed to bring together the visual world and narrative of Lagipula Hidup Akan Berakhir into a cohesive whole. The box set contains three blue and black vinyl records with different designs, a booklet featuring a new design and photographs by Meidiana Tahir from the album’s 2023 photo shoot, a letter from Hindia with an original stamp and signature, four photo cards, one graded collector’s card, a rubber keychain, and various special stickers.

For Hindia, the desire to create a box set like this has actually been around for a long time, driven by a wish to provide a broader platform to retell the story of their album. “It’s long been a dream of mine to have a cool box set packed with exclusive goodies like the international artists I grew up on,” said Baskara Putra, the name behind the Hindia project.

In the design of this vinyl box set, visual storytelling also plays a greater role than simply “wrapping” the music. Pramedya Nataprawira, Creative Director at 1024, views vinyl as a medium with vast room for exploration. Drawing inspiration from the world-building of Lagipula Hidup Akan Berakhir, the 1024 team translated the album’s world into various elements found within the box set. This approach demonstrates how physical music releases are increasingly aligning with collectible design practices. Each component contributes to the larger narrative. Collector’s cards and memorabilia, for example, with their limited quantities, create a sense of exclusivity and personal ownership. Even the choice of colors and patterns on each vinyl record becomes part of the release’s overall visual identity.

The decision to release this box set three years after the album’s initial release is also tied to the shifting personal context behind Lagipula Hidup akan Berakhir. According to Pramedya, when the album was first released, Baskara was in a rather fragile mental state. Three years later, once his condition had improved, the album – which had previously served as a record of a difficult period – could be revisited as part of his history without triggering trauma. Together with 1024’s Art Director, Gumilang Damar Budiman, this experience was then translated into the visual storytelling of this box set. In this way, physical releases truly have the power to reposition a work within the passage of time, and the album evolves into a distinct archive of Hindia’s journey.

Regarding the artistic concept behind the design of this box set, Pramedya Nataprawira elaborates: “The main focus of this deluxe box set lies in exploring physical textures that invite tactile interaction. Its visual connection is drawn directly from the original album cover by Ramzi Firhad. While the 2023 version presents a cave painting filled with colors and floating figures, this monumental version depicts the same space after everything has disappeared.”

In greater detail, the exterior of the box set uses deep cobalt blue in a monochromatic treatment, while elements such as the cave walls, angel silhouette, and album title are rendered through blind emboss/deboss techniques without any additional colored ink, creating the impression of a dense monolithic stone. Inside are three vinyl records with distinct visual treatments: blue with black splatter, blue & black smoke, and solid blue, with smiling and melancholic icons on the labels representing the emotional dynamics of each side. To preserve the album’s visual world, 1024 also brought Ramzi Firhad back to create new illustrations for the inner sleeves of the three records.

Gumilang Damar Budiman adds: “The boldest design decision we made lies in the packaging of the three vinyl covers inside the box. Each record is housed in a single jacket with a perforated mechanism that must be torn open to remove the record.”

This decision becomes part of the narrative of Lagipula Hidup akan Berakhir: to enjoy the music, we have to be willing to damage its packaging, echoing the idea that something must be sacrificed to gain something else. At the same time, the mechanism also responds to a reseller culture that often keeps vinyl records in pristine condition as objects of speculation without ever actually listening to them. In doing so, owners are faced with a choice: to preserve the release as a sealed object, or to open and use it, allowing its physical form to age over time.

“For us, this release ultimately stands not as an ordinary commercial product, but as a physical remnant of an era whose colors have faded yet whose traces remain,” says Gumilang Damar Budiman.

This approach reflects a shift in how the music industry views physical releases today. As access to music becomes increasingly easy and nearly limitless, the value of a physical release has shifted toward what streaming cannot provide: archival value, rarity, detail, and a sense of ownership.

Therefore, for Lagipula Hidup akan Berakhir, 1024 and Hindia have limited this box set to just 500 copies, priced at Rp3,499,000, excluding shipping and other fees. A portion of the proceeds from each box set sale will be donated through Kitabisa to victims of forest and land fires in various regions of Indonesia, as well as to support recovery efforts in East Nusa Tenggara following the earthquake.
